Whenever I hear that song by Coldplay, “Just Like This,” it makes me smile and think. (And dance).
How many times do I long for something more?
How many times do I expect superhero perfection from my loved ones?
What if instead of looking out and wanting something like that, I looked in and said, “ I want something like this?”
The thing we have can be enough. The people we love can be enough.
“This” can be enough.
I definitely found myself wishing away 2020, for good reason. I also expected 2021 to be something better, grand, normal.
But it may be something just like this.
The same child who refuses to wear pants EVERY DAY makes me the most beautiful homemade gifts.
The same child who talks at a shouting volume ALL DAY also quietly reads books side-by-side with me.
And the same husband that interrupts me a dozen times a day while working from home brings me coffee in bed every day.
Here are my favorite lyrics from the song:
“I’m not looking for somebody with some superhuman gifts. Some superhero, some fairytale bliss, just something I can turn to, somebody I can kiss…I want something just like this.”
All three of them are just as they should be, and I am thankful to have something just like this.
